Our Golden Years Together with Magnificent Seniors

Seniors Rocks!

I have to admit, my heart is soft for Senior dogs. Having had my foundation now since 1999 and working with rescuing animals (most dogs) I have met hundreds of wonderful Seniors. Yes, it is not for a very long time you get to keep them(years), however, the time seems in a way longer when you are together with them (time). If that makes any sense.
I have had to say good bye to many Seniors, but I have always been by their side. Always!
In my home I have right now eight (8) Seniors that I adore. I don't like traveling as much as I did earlier, even if I love traveling ;-) I cut down 50% with my travels.
Instead I love laying reading and hearing their deep snoring next to me or on the floor on their own bed(s). How they wake up and takes the day with grande relaxing tempo, like the southern Italian dogs they are (ok one American). And....their love is priceless, their deepness in their eyes when they look at you. They make you feel like a Hero!
This January we had to say good bye to one of our rescue dogs Jazz. For one year she had problems holding her bladder. I rolled away the carpets and mopping buckets on every floor.
My husband growled a little.
I looked at him with a wrinkle between my eyes and said, "When you get old(er) and start to wet yourself, am I going to get ride of you too?"

I have a hard time understanding people who suddenly abandon their old friend just because he is old and smelly. It shows me their (people) evaluation about becoming old.
My heart become warm when I read about more and more Senior Sanctuaries are opening, and .....that so many more people dare to adopt a Senior.
That's Amore!

FRIENDS FOREVER

These two characters are "rescue" dogs from Italy living together in Germany.
Both are now Seniors and got the kindest hearts ever. Sammy and Leah also live together with ten other rescue dogs in the house that we bought to fit all our dogs.

Many ask us if they live inside! Yes of course, they are family members.

Each one of them knows their sleeping place, some in our beds, and some prefers their own dog beds.

They chose and show us, what they want.

That's Amore!

Heading down to Napels Italy Shelter Mission

MISSION TIME
With my best volunteer we drove down to Napoli, Italy again. We were so exited and with the SUV full of dog food that we bought in Germany, we were even more exited. --Thank you for your donations, we cannot do this without your help.
We picked up beautiful Nicky and brought her with us to Rossella Shelter. A shelter AWL helped during 2009-2010 and now we are back. Rossella had moved and her shelter was top. Nice and clean.
Its a tough job carrying all these heavy bags...but who said we couldn't. Getting nice summer arms.
As always so many beautiful souls. This guy was so happy to get love and company. He is waiting for his home.
Another little cutie.
Two cuties having a conversation.
Rossella has worked with rescuing dogs for over 30 years. Amazing since it is a very tough work with no salary.

Love and hugs when we got to see each other again.

That's Amore!

Waiting

Joice is waiting for her dogwalker. When she sees him she opens the door herself. Nonna Maria thinks this place is ok for an old Senior, but that Joice could go to another window. Joice makes a lot of exiting sounds with a high pitch 🐾

VECKANS KRONIKA I TIDNINGEN NARA

That’s Amore!

WE NEED POSITIVE SUPPORT

AWL is gladly helping international people to find their pet/rescue dog a new home. However, lately we have worked many hours, planing, driving, arranging with information and interviewing/home-checking the possible new family --- this is all time for which we get no salary and often pay out of our own pockets.

We ask in return for the dog to be health-checked, vaccinated and to go and arrange a passport, so that the transfer of their family member to another deserving family is legal and goes smoothly.

Many of the dogs we help to find homes for end up in  Northern Europe, which involves a great deal of coordination between lots of people, and expense to drive or fly the dogs to their ultimate home.  Not to mention crossing several borders with different laws and requirements.

Incredibly, some of the people who turn to us to help them solve THEIR problem with THEIR pet, get frustrated at what we ask them to do.  All too often, they don't want to take the responsibility they accepted when getting their pet in the first place, don't want to take the time to do the adoption away correctly, and act like we are burdening them with requirements.  Too often, they simply dump the pet.  Others, tell us its too much work, and they will find another solution (which may well be dumping the pet).  After we have invested money and many hours, and not to mention the new family who may have bought pet items and are looking forward to their new family member --- WE have to call up and apologize to them, not the thoughtless owner who feels that doing it right is "too hard".

For all our efforts in helping people to rehome their pet, we ask for a donation, a small amount so the next pet we help  can get the help it needs.  But after so many hours, phone calls, driving or flying miles and miles --- many whom we have helped simply ignore our request, and suddenly do not answer the email/phone call.  The ingratitude, irresponsibility, and just plain rudeness is shocking!

I don't know about your parents, but we were always told that when messing up, take responsibility for your actions and you solve it the best way you can. When someone helps you, be polite and thankful.  But I guess not everyone has learned this lesson.
