FLOWER GIRL IS BLOOMING ON THE OTHER SIDE

She never made it, our Flower Girl. We called her Flower girl and the Italian volunteer Monica called her Vinavil. But regardless of what she was called in the short time we knew her, she felt the love. She was found on the street on a cold night, with a terrible skin condition. Probably she had mange and scabies, probably something else as well. Blood was taken for a test, but the results never made it back with the answers before she died.

Another volunteer on the street only put Adventix on her! (Like she had any ticks in that condition, and like that would help to heal). Sometimes volunteers with no knowledge can make it worse than better. The volunteer probably would say, “What else could I do?” But in a jungle with all the difficulties the sick animals need veterinarian care.

Sometimes, we have to leave animals on the street with their problems, like broken legs, or sick with disease. But with Flower Girl, we had a plan. We got a sponsor Mr Craig Kleber fro LA, for her treatments, and we got the treatment medicine in our hands. But Flower Girl decided to walk to the Rainbow Bridge instead. Many times the wounded and very sick animals may actually stay alive longer on the street, their survival instincts not to be eaten alive and suffer keeping them “on guard” and fighting against what is hurting them. They lay still and await death to take them away. When we “rescue teams” enter the equation and brings them into light, warmth and love, their survival instinct lets down its guard. The disease or injury has free reign and they fall into the eternal sleep with a restful heart and mind.

My heart aches and the pain is horribly big. I didn’t get to know her but her soul spoke clearer than anything else. Universe was testing Flower Girl but Universe was testing us who watched and tried to help even more. That’s the Universal Law or That’s Amore!

The Troop 007 Boy Scouts from NSA Support Site came out and kept our clients in a very happy mood. A lot of Amore and even presents. That's lovely Amore.
From lovely generous supporters, donations were dropped off at NSA Support Site vet.clinic.
Olivia was kind driving all the great donations out to our hospice in Lago Patria. The food and medicine will be storage for our drive to the 387 dog shelter. The bed, I guess Layla already took that as hers. Cleaning suppliers we will share, hospice and shelter. This is wonderful Amore!

Thank you all who are making it possible for us to help animals in need and many people behind the rescuing.

VINNIE THE BRAVE ONE- OUR HERO

AWL wants to send the biggest hug to Los Angeles dog Vinnie who donated a good check to the sick “Little Girl” for medication. Vinnie’s heart is big and loving and even if he is himself going through chemotherapy for cancer , he doesn’t stop thinking of those who are not as lucky as he, his masters’ Craig and Tracey say. In Vinnie we see the same big heart as his “parents” he too, is Amore.

Casa dell’Amore clients are holding their paws crossed for Vinnie, for a fast recovery. “He is a Trooper”, said Tigro, one of the 16 year old Hospice clients in Italy.

THIS LITTLE GIRL NEEDS HELP.

Monica, a great Italian volunteer has helped AWL rescuing the cat Edgar (see earlier blog) before.

Monica found this little sick girl on the street and brought her home. She is very sick but still wagging her tail and eats. But if not treated she will die, and it is a slow painful death.
She probably got leichaminios the mosquito disease and mange, probably scabies too. It is treatable but very expensive. That is why many people throws them on the street.
We would love to help this little girl.

Help us by sponsoring her and we will send you a certification for your generous help. We need 250 euro for medication and she also need special dog food that is very expensive but it works miracle (for kidney problem).

All together 350 euro and our AWL Martina will buy the food and medicine and deliver it to Monica.

DUSTY IS LEARNING SWEDISH

Our lovely Dusty from the hospice--who was run over by a car and left on the street bleeding and paralyzed for 2 hours.--is adopted by a Swedish lovely lady who lives on a farm and works with acupuncture on animals.

I just think it is amazing that Dusty will get treatment for her sensible back.

Two weeks after the accident she could walk again but she could have an old hernia. But she is full of life and happy girl. And she loves when Pio our volunteers sits at the hospice reading for her.

URGENT! AWL have been asked to help a shelter with 385 dogs inside It is very urgent. It is a tragic!
It was a Townhall/Government shelter but in October they stopped paying and now the dogs are suffering badly. Starving, and slowly suffering a horrible death. They don't even have money for the disposal of carcasses so many dead dogs but no place where to put them!

AWL have started a collection and we beg you to help us. WE are in BIG need of dog food (any kind) antibiotic, de worming, frontline, latex gloves, cleaning detergent, blankets. I wrote about the four legged war heros.

Little would I know about Universe/Life that this passion would catch my heart again 2012. A friend Tracey sent me an article about war dogs not being shipped home if they were retired in the war zone. That blew off the chair! (and me)

Let me announce our new project;

Animals Without Limits announces the formation of a fund to transport retired War Dogs back to the US where they can be adopted.

Currently, US Military Working Dogs, who are retired overseas are not transported back to the United States, because they are considered “retired equipment”. However, there is a surplus of people waiting to adopt these heroes, and there is a long waiting period. The cost to transport one of these brave animals to their prospective adoptive parents in the US can be $2500 or more, sometimes putting the adoption out of financial bounds.

Animals Without Limits, a non-profit organization founded in 1999 to assist animals in Chaos, Crisis and War Zones, has established a special fund to help pay the cost of transporting these retired hero-dogs back to the United States to a waiting adoptive family, until the law can be changed that would ensure the government repatriates them before retirement.

The AWL rescue team and friends of Simona-- and her rescue team--, they went in and made a fantastic change for the lady. Angy took warm home made chicken soup, they brought cloths for the lady too. AWL sponsored with medication, de worming, adventix, dog bowls, dog food and blankets.
There are 8 dogs and one female with puppies. We are in an urgent need to have them transported to Dr Damiani for treatments --also spay and neuter. To be able to do that we are in big desperate need for donations. Please donate on paypal, you can find it here on our blog.

Cleaning mission in action. A whole day non stop cleaning and medicating.

UP DATE FROM THE SCENE;

"We went with food, deworming,advantix,clothes,blancket,a lot of water, hot chicken soup.

Ivomec for the dog with mange and a lot of bags to put the garbage.

We cleaned as much was possible. She was happy about the help.

She said that people put everything on fire twice and she also went to the Hospital :( this happen also because people want to occupate her house (it isn't her house since also the lady occupated it illegally).She lived for 7 years in another house that the mayor gave to her but there was the first time people put her on fire and she left that place and went in this house where again it happens.

The house is totally destroyed. She just can use one room but no windows or doors and the rain go inside and also the rats :(((

People put the garbage inside her house since the garbage container are in her garden, so we put these on the other side of the street.

We talked to her about the dogs and she would be happy to get help with care and sterilization. She said that we can bring some dogs but she would keep some since she really love them.

I think just two dogs really need care. The one with mange and another with a broken leg.

We will come back. We want to find foster home for the dogs that need care. It was a hard day but we are happy :)

WILLIAM WOULD LOVE TO BE IN A FOREVER HOME AND NOW ITS URGENT

URGENT!!! This is William "Goof" he was happy roaming around a hotel, and I went there for 10 days medicating a very bad ear infection. We saved his life since he had a big infection in his body and worst was the liver--but got caught in time since we brought him to vet. After one month treatment he was healthy and we had him neutered.

BUT the hotel couldn't have him roaming around so two ladies found him a temperate foster home. He has doing very well. I got an email from one of the ladies saying that the foster family is now moving on base. WILLIAM IS IN A BIG NEED TO GET A FOSTER HOME OR ADOPTED OR HE WILL END UP .....please help! We all have been fighting for him, don't let this happen to him, he wont survive on the streets, he has been to long in the hands of humans and the dog catchers will lock him into a concentration shelter.

I had CLYDE cremated, and a German woman painted this beautiful urn. It's my first time I had an animal cremated, it feels strange in a way. I am constantly afraid that Max my little boy will find it and play, wondering what all the dust is inside.

I love this though, our handsome stray born in North Carolina, lived in Italy and died in Germany. That's Amore. RIP dust love.

Lindy (picture) and her husband David, are great animal friends. They have been following AWL missions down in Napoli many times and even helped fostering a very sick dog Bonita back to her health. But sadly they had to move to Germany.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO TRAVEL TO AFRICA TO SEE POVERTY

The Italian team with Simona and friends from us AWL team came these pictures from a lady living in Castel Volturno in Italy.
She lives in a room in a house with no roof, no water, nothing to cook. In Campania region you dont have any security net to fall on when you dont have a home, job or being sick.
Her only friends are 8 strays that she talks to and gives her love back in return. The people around want to have her removed, out on the street somewhere else. They claim it stinks. Her yard is full of trash, but outside on the streets there are same amount trash. Who is worse?

This dog is in need of treatment, she got mange. Another dog has a broken leg after a car accident.

Instead of wrinkling the nose and complain, Simona with friends and the lovely AWL team went there today to clean and medicate.

We are in desperate need of donation to be able to help this woman and the 8 strays. We need to have all the dogs spayed and neutered, vaccinated, examined and then find foster home.

We also need water containers to feel up and deliver to the lady. Cloths, blankets, dog food and of course food to the lady.

FRANK THE SUPERHERO TOGETHER WITH MOM

Once in a while I remember why I do all this work, and for free.

Why do I love the work of finding these miserable lives nearly dead? Behind their eyes I see their sparkle of life still glowing. Is it because they never give up like we humans? Is it because they never complain like humans? Nor destroy?

I love being in the surgery room together with Dr Damiani, to hear him and Dr Fransesco discuss, take out their books and show me the explanation. They draw on papers, their eyes are sparkling, they can also see the life in the animals eyes, even if the dog's body tells another story.

Tonight I got a picture that reassured me why I am doing this....WE NEVER GAVE UP!

Frank had to go through a 6 hour surgery since he was infected throught his whole body, Dr Damiani and Dr Fransesco did fantastic work. Then it was many drives from hospice to the clinic, some small complications but we did it!!! His beautiful mom sent me this picture with a note tonight:

" Chiara Buccolini He is amazing! Every day at work with me (I'm working in a shop of saddles) He sleeps in my room ... a beautiful love story. I take the photo and he is a friend of mine. Thank you very much. All this is thanks to you. now that I saw the old photos I weep while he sleeps. :-)"

FOOD DONATION FROM NAVY BASE

It is a lovely feeling when you get that email "food donation --- bring a big car" First, Michael and his friend picked it up and drove it to our hospice in Lago Patria. Two Pallets of mixed cat and dog food.
Todd drove down from Germany and stopped by the hospice to help load all the food again into the SUV. Steve was there to help and they even had to load some into his car. AWL donated mostly all the food to Adrianne's shelter, where 400 dogs are sitting in cages. Some food went to people who feed dogs on the street. Steve fed some cats outside the base, too.
Then the following week we got a new message, "another pallet of dog food" Steve alone drove and filled his car and emptied it at the hospice. Anna and the co workers at the NEX helped Steve.
We are so thankful for these gift, it means a lot but for the four legged ones that are stuck in the cages for years; they will have a full stomach and freeze less on the cold nights.

For me it was very important to have Steve visiting this kind of shelters. They never come out on a walk, the horrible noise, just waiting.....

CAT EDGAR´S LAST WISH

During my monthly visit to Italy, Angy --- one of the hospice volunteers --- and I went to the veterinarian clinic with some of our hospice dogs. It was turmoil of emotional stress since one of our clients was going to be euthanized--- the eternal sleep. Even if Rosita was 19 years old and sick, it became stress since when love is involved it isn´t easy to make that decision (or go a head and say those words). Though it is a gift to be able to give them eternal peace, there are many feelings involved.

When we entered the clinic a man was going out and in his hand he carried a cat in a transportation cage. He stopped me and asked if he could donate some things for AWL. In a hurry I handed him our card and told him where he could leave the donations. I forgot all about him at the same moment I entered the examination room together with Rosita.

We had three other dogs for different check-ups. Angy and I walked out to the waiting room while Dr. Fransesco made the examination room ready for Layla. The man that had left with the cat earlier was now back in the waiting room, again with the cat. I asked our veterinarian what was wrong?

Nothing, was wrong with the cat, he was healthy as a 15-year-old cat can be, but the man´s wife didn´t want the cat anymore. They wanted to put the cat to sleep.

I could see that Dr. Fransesco was conflicted and didn´t want to do it. He had told the man to go home and speak to his wife that there was nothing wrong with the cat. And Dr. Fransesco had hoped the wife could come back and they could talk about another solution. She never came! Instead she sent her husband back and this time he had a book with him if-- he had to sit there and wait to have his cat put down to sleep, however long time it would take.

According to the man, the cat hid from the family --he told us several times-- “what kind of life is that to have a cat?” Upon my question if he had any children, he told us his daughter was 14 years old. What kind of morals do you teach your daughter by euthanizing a cat because he is hiding and making his business outside the cat litter box? “Well she hates the cat!”

“If I was the cat I would hide too if I knew the whole family hated me!” I replied.

He was charming telling us all these negative things about the cat and if we took the cat, we would also get all the cat things they had for him. We were angry, the poor cat Edgar didn´t have any voice of his own and when we open the cat box he looked with timid eyes and a small meow came out. This cat could not be put down to sleep!

More information was filling out to Edgar´s story, they were moving back to the States. More was being added, the owner apologized saying they had had an ad for Edgar on a Navy website but no one had answered. I couldn´t help telling him it was a very positive ad, totally opposite what he had just told the veterinarian. He blushed. I looked at him shaking my head.

He continued, “Well it is my wife who will take care of him she is the one who will deal with this cat while I am gone on a ship for a long time”

A cat that was hiding would suddenly give one person a lot of work after 15 years together!

We couldn´t believe how much he came up with and was obviously scared by his wife (or so he told), they didn´t do this together. I took up my phone and called our great volunteer Marty for help. When I hung up I turned around gave him our business card and told him to donate to AWL as a thank you since we would take care of Edgar. He thanked me several times and it was so hard not to show any anger, instead I said. “You might have a good heart but you sure don’t have any balls.”

1) Did we get any donations? Only the things Edgar had in his home that the owner had promised our foundation before we met Edgar and heard about his story. If I hadn´t overheard the conversation or been there that day, Edgar would have been dead.

2) According to the foster mom Marty found for Edgar, he was adorable and did not hide, nor did he pee or poo outside the box. He just wanted to cuddle all day with her.

We never got any email back from owner thanking or asking how Edgar was doing. When I saw their ad I wrote a message asking why no donations? Answer back: “we hadn´t had time we are packing!”

Yesterday I received an email from Marty that Edgar had passed away. He stopped eating and grieved his lost family --- the ones who callously abandoned him and wanted to put him to sleep for their convenience. The foster mom took him to the veterinarian who confirmed his grief and tried to give him fluid and even give him baby food with a syringe. Edgar´s only wish was to be close to his foster mom and his heart stopped beating out of heartache.

Edgar knew he was unwanted and as children who cannot speak for themselves, he had to express in actions. When not being seen or wanted anymore, a creature´s hope inside blows out like a candle, the pain is overwhelming and the heart and soul wanders away lost by pain.

Two different veterinarians met Edgar (not related or know each other), they confirmed that he was a healthy cat.

ITALIAN TEAM WORK RESCUING A GERMAN SHEPARD

Yesterday me (Martina) and Chiara where on the Asse Mediano coming back home.
We saw 3 cars stopped on the right side of the street and also in the middle of the street near the guardrail. 5 people were near an handsome german shepard about one years old. He was laying down close to the people.
So we stopped the car and ran across the street to see the dog.
He was fine and sooo sweet! one boy told... us that he was running in the middle of the street. I have never seen so many people worried for a dog.
One younger man was a dog trainer volunteer in a kennel.
After me (Martina) and Chiara also another car stopped and another volunteer.
I had a collar and a leash in my bag.
A woman called the asl (dogcatcher to the horrible shelters in Campania, once you are inside the shelter no way bakc) but I asked PLEASE PLEASE to someone to bring him and I would help to find him a home...then one of the younger men (the one in the pic with the black jacket) said "i will adopt him!" :)
He also got 4 dogs :) 3 female and a male.
Then he said " now I've to castrate him..." so I said that we will sponsor the surgery...

When you commit to adopt a dog from AWL, you have obligations because AWL is assuming many obligations. AWL is taking care of a lot of paper work, health check up/vaccinations driving back and forth with the dog to different offices for passport, reports, the Townhall. Not to mention making sure YOU are suitable for the dog, and vice versa. It cost us a lot of money and time.

So, when you say you will adopt one of our clients, we take you at your word. Please have the integrity and honesty to follow through with your committment, or at the very least, tell us when your plans change, instead of evaporating --- leaving us guessing.

MAX FOUND HIS WAY BACK TO HAPPINESS

Remember earlier on our blog about MAX who was abandoned by his family when they went back home? To re-fresh your memory, click here.

The foster-mom waited for her husband Steve to come back after a short trip, Steve was eager to meet MAX. When Steve returned he fell head over heals in love with MAX.

The neighbors had complained over MAX howling when being home alone, MAX suffered from big seperation anxiety. But Steve went over and talked to them re-assure that they were working to help MAX to become better.
Days went by, Steve and MAX adore each other, out running every day. I got a message "they wanted to adopt MAX."

Of course, we got very happy at this news. I had the pleasure to meet Steve, a lovely man who spoke highly about his best friend and all his tricks. MAX sat content next to his best friend´s side, calm and content.

Steve told me that they still worked on the seperation anxiety but Max had become much better already.

A family abandonen him, AWL volunteers helped MAX to get healthier and find someone for him, and a wonderful family fostered then adopted him. It shows that whatever nation we are from, there are bad and good people. But focusing on the good, That´s Amore!

MAX was castrated thanks to AWL´s Spay and Neuter Project 2011.

Also your donations help to pay for x-rays so we can udnerstand what is going on inside a client´s body and not have to guess when things are not quite right. It is some of the hardest work to rescue animals, it sometimes eats your heart up. Enormous hours working 24/7 around the clock, arguing with people to get them to do the right thing, and to feel let down many times. But when you see their eyes when you walk in the door, their tail "thump- thump- thumping" their thankfulness for you only standing in the door...That is Amore!

A BEAUTIFUL SOUL RIP

A couple of days ago I was down working at our hospice in Southern Italy. My last day, I took some clients with me to Dr Damiani´s clinic. Dr Francesco examined our Amica since she seemed to be in pain. Amica previously had been a very happy stray with her friend outside a food store named CONAD for many years. People knew and fed them and kept an eye on them, too. I remember three years ago when AWL started in Italy, a veterinarian and I stopped to check on them because earlier had I seen a wound on one of the dog´s ears. Suddenly, out from CONAD strode the store manager holding his two arms in his side asking what we are doing? The veterinarian spoke fluent Italian and told him who we were and that we only wanted to make sure the dogs were doing fine. He nodded his head that we could go ahead but he watched every move we made.

The parking guard who watched over the dogs was very friendly. Every time I went in to the store I bought them each one dog pate. We were allowed to feed them if we walked away from the store and fed them at the parking area, he showed me where. These two dogs were chubby; well fed by many and content.

One day after XX months I received a text message from Martina, that the dogcatchers had taken Amica, the older female. Someone had reported she had cancer and had to be removed from the streets. We had to get her back!

I said yes, of course.

Pio drove to the dogcatcher and veterinarian station, and told them about the hospice. We would take care of Amica. If we assured that we would medicate and re-wrap the surgery wound on her leg she could be ours, but we had to come later and show her to them to prove that she was doing better. Pio came to the hospice with Amica and all her medications. Twice a day I wrapped Amica´s leg, it was always a struggle, she was slippery like an eel. But she never did anything to harm us, never growled. She got her own room on the second floor, and it was a victory the day she walked down by herself and out in the grass to do her business.

She was always quiet and beautiful-her squirrel-like eyes always looked at you very intensely and seemed to be questioning if we could be trusted?

Fast forward to the second weekend in December: Dr Francesco examined her and felt big lumps, he could tell she was in discomfort, just as we imagined. X rays were taken and it was with misty eyes I could see, she had big tumors and skeletal cancer. Her time had come to cross the Rainbow Bridge. Even if that is what our hospice is about ---to give them a wonderful time before they start to suffer ---it is always painful to make the decision and to say goodbye.

You need to be a certain kind of person to be able to do this type of work --- to be there when it is time, and make the tough call. But at the same time we are happy that she didn´t have to die under a car on a cold day, suffering. Or, at a dogcatcher’s shelter in a cage on cold concrete floor with a lot of desperate barking around her. Instead, two of her old friends were holding her paw when the eternal sleep was put in. Very calm and no pain, her former street friends were waiting happily for her arrival across the Rainbow Bridge, where the grass is green and lush, and no dogcatchers or concentration-camp/shelters exist. Because That´s Amore.

She will be missed by many, and those who loved and took care of her.

I got a phonecall, and this story is about Susy who fostered him, her husband fell in love with him and they adopted him. AWL sponsored neutering and vaccination.

Scott McClure--Scoutmaster. It was a pleasure to meet you all, you made a great face lift at AWL´s Hopsice (garden work)

It was with pleasure I returned down to Italy briefly, to the hospice to meet up with all the clients. On Saturday morning, the Scouts came and Kyle was in charge for a project helping AWL´s hospice. Weeks before on a Sunday, he and his fellow scouts had bagged in the store at Support Site, collecting $900 dollars that he later used to buy material for his planned project at the hospice.

They were a nice goup of approximatelz 10; between 10-55 years of the age.

The clients were happy to get so much attention and the garden got a nice uplift. Half the fence was painted, a new big metal shelf was brought up. And we got dog food too. They worked and cleaned very nicely the whole day, old things were thrown away.

It was a loving --- and cleaning--- Amore day.

BACK ON TRACK

MAX is his name and he is probably around 1-2 years old. Dr Fransesco examined him last evening. He is very skinny 40-50 kg and is now being treated for infection in his body, de wormed etc.
Max fooled the security guards and went on base, saw the vet clinic door open and went in. The receptionist called us. MAX has an American microchip number. We don't get the name or any information. That ties our hands.

Max was picked up by a volunteer Susi, that are having him short term foster home. He is lovely, follows her around, great with her small rescue dogs.

House broken, licking and loving children, he knows sit, lay and shake paw!

We are searching after a family that can give him time and love and security.

MAX have gone through a lot. I found out that he has been in a car accident as a puppy, and had lung-injery. They had to put in a chest tube. He is doing great now!

And now...his family left back to the States and MAX has been on the street for some time since he is skinny (that happens with former pets they don't know how to get food left out, it has been served frequently when he had a home)

His face have scares from dog attacks (Max is a former pet and doesn't understand street talk and becomes an easy target for fights)

He is a goof with a big heart. Help him find home!

WEEKEND IN AWL LIFE

Olivia and me were walking around in the city. Olivia was amazed that there were both abandon people and dogs (homeless with their dogs)
We got a garden uplift at the hospice this weekend. Pio cut the hedge and Ivan cut the grass. Ivan's other half Fransesca walked all the young dogs. We are so thankful for that and I know the young ones loves it. Also it is for a good cause for them who have adopted them and waiting for them knows that their dogs are taken well cared off.

HOSPICE AWL CASA DELL'AMORE

Rosita is one of the oldest clients and have been with us for one year. She is doing great even if she turns 19 years old.
Sometimes you need help to be washed, the volunteers washed her in warm water but the sun was wonderful so they washed outside. Warm and Sunny.
Garden, house cleaning, washing, medicating and loving up on the four legged. That is the purpose for our clients.

Dog walks for the younger one's. They are lucky but we are luckiest

Sassi OUR WONDERDOG, FULL OF LOVE

You can read about Sassi in earlier blogs about how her owner rescued her, starved her, then abandonen her to AWL.

We take care of Sassi, she is now spayed and our volunteer Martina took her into her home and 6 dogs for a couple of days recovering and monitoring her. This is the update I got from Martina.

"She was perfect with dogs(at the beginning growled but then she loved all my sweet dogs,especially Buba), perfect with the cat, perfect with pee :) always outside! She slept with us in the bedroom last night and this morning she woke me up to go out and pee :). She waited me flat on the floor all the bowls firt to all my dogs and then to her. I never heard her bark in these two days. She is also learning to go on a leash. She is sweet, I love her so much! "

If you are a loving and thoughtful patience person/family and would love to foster her or getting her what she deserves the most, a permanent home. She need a very firm hand that will help her understand what you want from her and to let her be who she is.

She is full of Amore!

THE STORY IS ABOUT WHEN AWL WAS BORN

My weekly column in the Swedish Magazine Nara. A journey from 1999 to now with the birth of Animals Without Limits by a little dying dog. Hope you will enjoy the story.

My first encounter with street dogs occurred many years ago in Sofia, Bulgaria. Two dark brown eyes would change my life and many others' lives. I worked full time as an animal communicator and often flew around Europe to various clients. I had my own office on the well-known Gardet in Stockholm, and the waiting list for my services was long. But something in my heart did not feel quite right and no matter how hard I tried to explain the feelings, my friends didn’t understand what I meant. "You've got it all! You are already changing many lives! " they said.

By a "coincident" I flew over a weekend to a world conference down in Sofia, Bulgaria. The subject was the sterilization and castration of stray dogs. I had no expectations or hopes since I had no knowledge in that subject. Inspired by the lecturers and the participants knowledge that they shared something suddenly began bubbling inside me.

Later that evening we were a few who would go out to eat. I went in advance out to the street, suddenly it was like someone touched my soul and held on. My eyes were drawn into a dark entrance staircase, where two dark brown eyes searched mine. A street dog hunted my eyes, he conveyed that he needed help. He could not walk, but there was nothing self-pitying from his side, more a kind of waiting. No despair, but more patience in him.

There was something big behind the chestnut-colored eyes, a wisdom I had never seen before even though I had met hundreds of dogs previously. It felt as if I had been there for several minutes, but it was only for seconds.

Suddenly something snapped inside me, I sobbed over my despair that I could not take him with me. I could not take him to a vet, could not even find a home for him. The only thing I could do was listening to his story, and then turn my back on him.

My heart was broken, the hopelessness of abandoning someone who needed help. I had only experienced security at home in Sweden, never before had I seen this side of life.

I ran up to my room at the hotel and cried for hours. I did not want to go out. Later that night I took out pen and paper and began to write. On 23 October 1999, on my 36^th birthday, Animals Without Limits was born, on that hotel floor. Thanks to a stranger's soul that had communicated with my soul. A seed within me began to germinate, and since that day we (AWL) have been able to help thousands of injured, stray dogs.

Angels are working in different disguises toward different souls. When we open up our subconscious, we meet our teachers. That's Amore!

Our hospice is running with a tough schedule but wonderful volunteers. Layla is having a rest after her lovely mom and daughter came all the way from Sweden to visit.
Fantastic donation, thank you Federica and Ivan, you came with food and love. A great day at the hospice and thank you for your help.

The wind was terrible and made some damage that Pio fixed with assistance by Chiara.

Well we all know the story with Ms Moment dumping Shaggy that she had fostered. In an emergency we had to put him in a kennel. Sad part is that he has a family that is only waiting for his passport to take him to his forever home in Sweden.

But Pio and Martina went out to Lega ProAnimale and walked him. He is such a grateful loving dog. His mom in Sweden will have so much fun with him

A POEM FROM MARTINA RICCI

Who is behind the face of a volunteer?

Did you ever wonder who is behind the face of a volunteer?

Did you ever do to yourself for a moment a few questions about his life, what he does to get by?

Did you ever try to think that behind these faces there are normal people with normal jobs who make accounts in their pockets to get to the end of the month as we all usually do?

So what's different between voluntary and "ordinary people"?

Someone pays him for what he does? Someone asks him to do what he does? Someone forces him to do what he does?

The answer is no.

The volunteer is a poor fool, a fool for love, a crazy idealist, a dreamer.

The volunteer is an ordinary boy, sometimes little more than boy, who generally keeps his small house, its small and dirty cars, its small and big spending ... and that 99% of the time he drives around in old clothes, worn by time and full of hair!

This is not just because he doesn't love himself.

The volunteer doesn't have time!

He doesn't have time on weekends to shop and choose the most fashionable clothes ... even then he wouldn't have many opportunities to wear them.

He doesn't have time off from work because every moment is devoted to an emergency, a day shelter, a dog that is waiting for him.

The volunteer has no money ...

He hasn't money because the volunteer sees no reason to allocate those few euros to himself when he knows that with the same amount could save a dog ... or at least make a small contribution to this purpose.

The volunteer doesn't want.

He doesn't want to go shopping since a day of shopping cannot stand the comparison with a day dedicated to his great passion.

Because it's this that keep a volunteer alive: passion!

A passion that fills and breaks his heart!

A passion that keeps him awake at night!

A passion that burns his soul!

A passion that leads him until the 15^th of the month and never over that day ... since he is able to say no to the coffee,to the sea, cigarettes, pizza ... even to the shopping! but he is not be able to say NO to the eyes of a dog
...

And then what does the volunteer gain from all this?

What goes into the pockets of a volunteer?

Well ... nothing ... in his pockets are nothing by lint!

But did you ever wonder how is his heart so full of love?

Full of joy, of hope, of illusion ... but a so tender delusion!

Did you ever see this?

Did you ever go beyond that aspect a bit 'sloppy, these tired eyes... did you ever look at that little light in his eyes?

Try to do it ... try to wear those clothes, to feel that passion, the disappointments, the pain ...

Try to imagine how he feels when, after another day of struggle against the world, he gets a call that says "take my dog, I do not want it anymore..."

Try to understand how awful it can be to hear this...

Because the volunteer can't!

He can't also take responsibility for your dog because he doesn't have the opportunity.

He can't understand how, after so many years, you can give away a piece of your heart.

He can't sleep during the night just because he wasn't be able to help.

And he wants to help only the soul alone, that you are abandoning because it has become uncomfortable or inconvenient; because after so many years he began to give problems, because her hair isn't the same and people no longer stop with admiration ...

Because the volunteer wants to help this abandoned soul; the man who abandons the soul is not entitled to consideration, respect, or even to exist.

The volunteer does not have anything for him.

The volunteer is only a VOLUNTEER.

Try to make these considerations before making another phone call looking for some poor devil to take charge of the task that you are too cowardly and selfish accomplish.

Try to make these considerations before you expect to be assisted in your selfish task.

Try to feel the pain that's in that "I can not" followed by the millions of thoughts that floods his head in the end that will do the soul alone. And what a sad life he has become, knowning the one he believed that was his family is dumping him without any problems ...

Try to live your gesture from his eyes ...

Not from the eyes of a dog because the dog forgives, the dog is innocent, the dog doesn't know of your justifications.

The dog will probably go on to think for the rest of his life he had done something immensely wrong to be abandoned by his pack, his leader.

The dog will go on to suffer hoping for your return ... forever.

But not the volunteer.

The volunteer doesn't have this gift.

The volunteer doesn't forgive.

Look in his eyes before you make that call.

And then ask yourself who is the beast.

DR VITTORIO VISITING AWL HOSPICE CASA DELL'AMORE

We are so privileged to have a very gentle and good veterinarian visiting our Hospice to make a health check on every one of our residents there. And, if needed injections done and prescriptions made.
Also those who are in need will get pedicure and proper care. We are so thankful for Dr Vittorio he is very gentle and kind to the animals. AND, to come and make the visit on a Saturday staying for a couple of hours ... that is fantastic.
And AWL Italian team are fabulous. They give me updates, ask questions and make suggestions. Together make the solutions. They never do anything without my approval. After Dr Vittorio's visits, I get a thorough report and pictures. That is team work.
Some have been wondering and forgiven me if I haven't been clear in some changes in AWL Italy.

I (Mia) am still the President, making all the decisions about money and still am the one holding the bank accounts. I get reports and pictures and make the decisions about what dog needs what or which kind of help. Martina is my eyes and ears, and together with AWL Italy team the biggest help. Martina and I are in contact several times each and every day via email, FB and phone. I couldn't be more happy to have her and the team running things for AWL Italy, they are doing so much toward making a big change with the stray problems and people's abandonment and disregarded commitments.

ABANDONED,NEGLECTED, DUMPED AND BROKEN PROMISES

When we see animal neglect on pictures we condemn the people who do this. We are angry and want those people to get caught and punished. But when it happens around us and near us by people we kind of know, what do we do?

For four years has AWL been involved in many cases of animal abuse and abandoned dogs here in Campania region.

Even more have we heard broken promises from people. But we have continued working hard to rescue animals, in some cases, we've even had to report people to the authorities. We can't have blinders, even when it is people we know. But tonight happened something that is simply not acceptable.

Shaggy Raggy (not on any pictures)was one of the biggest Casanovas who loved to roam around free. He got adopted by a Swedish lady and a foster lady Ms. Moment offered to foster him. She had also found this black and white (pictures) hunting dog on the streets that she brought in to keep. (She already had two smaller dogs.)

Because she was fostering an AWL dog, AWL provided her with everything, food, medical bills, frontline and de worming, we even provided with medical treatments for the dog she found and wanted to keep, Sassi.

Sassi looked good when found --- a happy healthy young dog. One day when we, as agreed, were going to pick up Shaggy for his vet appointment I saw Sassi behind the gate. You can see the picture above. I got terrified that was not something I expected to find in someones home--- she was in a horrible condition. I brought her into the veterinarian for examination, afraid she had any diseases. The veterinarian did all the examinations but told us that she was neglected, what she needed was food. The vet asked if AWL could take care of the dog because she was very underweight.

I spoke to Ms. Moment about it --told her this was not looking good but I would give her a chance (son) and we agreed that we would keep Sassi until she was healthy and then switch dogs. Moment was welcome to visit her dog whenever she wanted. She expressed many times that she missed "her Sassi"

Back with Shaggy, complaints were made by her neighbors and she had to move to a new area. We went and visited Shaggy who was not happy to be locked in a small area. Ms Moment jogged a lot and we asked if she could jog with Shaggy or her son could walk Shaggy, we even offered to pay a dog walker. Nothing was done.

Sassi was with us and slowly, very slowly she gained weight and became happy and playful.

The Swedish passport for Shaggy was delayed since some antibodies didn't develop, we all were frustrated over that message. We always informed Ms. Moment, who claimed to be "fine" with the delay, not happy but ok. "I cannot wait to get my Sassi back" was her exact words. She came few times to the hospice and petted Sassi on the head, took a bag of dog food and left.

Ms. Moment was there for the hospice one year anniversary October 8th. We told her that Shaggy's owner would fly down and pick him up close to Christmas. Ms. Moment was not happy since she would travel over ThanksGiving and Christmas. AWL offered to solve that by having him kenneled. She agreed again.

Back in Germany I get this e mail that Shaggy has destroyed her garden and her house, her landlord is not happy. (That Shaggy would suddenly destroy her house? no one was allowed to come and help her fix her house and garden)

So we agree via e mail that a switch would be done three days later since arrangements from Germany via Italy had to be done. But she wrote back that we shouldn't tell her what to do, she didn't want Sassi back. Her landlord wouldn't accept that. Well, that was nothing AWL could do about since we had an agreement. No room at hospice for healthy young dogs.

She stopped communicating and tonight I got a phone call from one of our volunteers that during the late evening close-up she found Shaggy deposited in the backyard where we keep a Pitt bull isolated since she attacks dogs. Also since no one knew about this, a tragedy could have occurred also it scared our volunteer to find a big barking dog who she didn't know of.

Moment didn't pick up her own dog, Sassi. Now it has become other volunteers problem since Shaggy cannot stay at the hospice. If he could we would have had him a long time ago.

What kind of person does this, when we had agreed to take him back and switch would be made in three days.

Well she abandoned her "own Sassi" too. If you can neglect a dog that bad with skin and bones we should have seen this coming...but what is it we are saying "You should be giving people a second chance!"

We are tired of cleaning up after others, we never get to finish our own rescue missions from real sick shelter dogs. We are not neutral anymore, this has to stop!

CASA DELL'AMORE FIRST ANNIVERSARY

What a Party! Animals Without Limits Hospice in Italy, Casa dell'Amore, celebrated our one (1) year anniversary. WE had wonderful guests, generous wallets and furry friends were so happy with all the petting.

I drove down from Germany and with me I had 5 cartons donations from Elisabeth Kruse.
The Ricci Collection did it again. Martina Ricci designed AWL bracelets with its unique AWL charm attached. As always 50 % of proceeds were donated to AWL from the sale of this wonderful jewelry.

Lis Kruse sent 5 BIG cartoons of dog supplies (picture will come later of the opening) to the hotel where I am staying in Southern Germany, which I am driving down, perfect timing for AWL's one (1) year anniversary of the opening of the hospice.

Lis also donated money to the "Kleber $5000 Grant Challange." Twice!

Wine and Spice Agent Sabine von Voltejus had a special request on her birthday. Instead of gifts she made a donation box. She gave AWL the fruits of the gifts for "her" day.

Another great Saturday with the Italian Team and Hospital Painting Team. From early morning to late afternoon everyone were painting, repairing and loving up on the dogs.

Kleber Challenge Grant $5000

I am writing to you to share something that is near and dear to my heart. And to ask for your help....
If you have spent any time with me over the last two years, you have probably heard me talk about my friend Mia and her organization, Animals Without Limits (AWL). In fact, you may have seen pictures of me with her and the animals in Italy.
The mission of their organization is to rescue animals who don't have a voice....from the streets, from shelters, from abusive conditions in parts of the world where they do not have animal welfare structures like we do here in the United States.

One of Mia's most proud accomplishments working through AWL is the creation of Casa dell'Amore, a hospice/rehab center for dogs in Campania, Italy. Mia brings old/sick dogs to the hospice....many of whom have spent 10+ years in cages in horrible government shelters....and gives them love, food, a warm bed and a chance to walk on the grass before it is time to go across the Rainbow Bridge. For some it is a year or two. For others a few weeks. But they pass over knowing that someone has loved them.

It breaks my heart to hear from Mia that she is in danger of losing the hospice because she can't raise money fast enough to pay the rent. And that is where I am asking for your help.

I and my ex-husband Craig have made a Challenge Grant to AWL of $5000. We will match each dollar raised up to that amount. With $10,000 the animals would know that they have a home for most of the next year.

He adopted me in North Carolina in October 2005. Before that, he had lived in the forest for one year, the vets guessed from his condition. They thought he was about three years old. One day, I saw workers outside who were tearing down the woods and building roads; they were throwing rocks after him (I didn’t know him at that time), and I yelled to stop them. Olivia was 2 months old with a bad case of colic, Todd was in Iraq and my mother was visiting from Sweden. We "only" had 3 dogs back then--- Ranger, my Tjojs and Shiloh. Clyde must have thought that “hey that yelling lady might be a good human to stay with!” He came up and stayed on my front porch for several days. My mother told me I could not take him in as I had too much to handle already. I sent email pictures to Todd in Iraq, asking his opinion. He said “get him to the vet, and bring him in.” The die was cast.

Well, I sent my mother back to Sweden and brought Clyde into the family. I have never, ever regretted that decision.

He was always so patient, gentlemanly, kind and gentle. Except with cats, we learned to our chagrin at LegaProAnimale. His breath was horrible from his rotten teeth (from eating God-knows-what while in the woods), but his heart was so pure. And he was such a magnificent sight, when he would run (“prance” really) with his head held high, and his tail up. We never learned the story of how he came to be alone in the woods. We have always suspected he was cast off by a military family. Maybe it was time to move, and they didn't think they could take him with them. Maybe they had other excuses. All we do know is he was alone, in the woods, in not-great shape.

Over the years with us, he would seem to "perk up" if he saw a black family. Could that have been his original pack? The sounds of children playing, laughing and yelling would always get his attention, even as late as his last few days, and he would look in that direction excitedly. Did he miss, and still seek, a family with young children that cast him off? He clearly loved us, protected us, stayed by our side. But was there someone, a family, from his past that he still searched for? We can only guess. And suspect.

So he came to us six years ago, almost to the day. Six years isn't much for an adult human, but for a dog it is half a lifetime. Especially for a large breed like a Collie. Especially for one who spent a long time in the cold and wet, living on who-knows-what. The days of running and playing for him were now in the past. Walking him was like walking grandpa, a slow shuffle. His nights were spent pacing the floor, constantly checking, drinking and occasionally falling asleep from the fatigue. His travels from the sandhills of North Carolina, to four years with us in Southern Italy, and a few days in Germany, were nearing an end.

So, on a crystal clear, warm, early autumn afternoon in Germany; with not a cloud in the sky, the leaves starting to turn to orange and red, and the faint image of a half-moon visible over the treetops, we helped Clyde across the final barrier for him. His body and mind were failing, but not his heart and love for our family. It was heartbreaking to make the decision, and to let him go. I wanted to hold on to him forever. But he was in pain, and wanted so dearly to be set free. It was really the only thing I could do for him.

I don’t have to tell you I miss him, you know and understand. I wanted to share my pain and happy memories with my great animal friends. Clyde's in a better place, free again to run and "prance", play, bark at horses and maybe even chase a few cats.

I take solace in the belief that we’ll walk together again when I cross the Rainbow Bridge and see him waiting there, with Tjojs, Ranger and others.

Farewell, our "English Gentleman" Clyde. We miss you terribly.

ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY

We have a big reason to party October 8th at Casa dell'Amore. One year ago we openned up our doors to Campania's first hospice for old strays. We also openned our arms for some helpless younger strays that were later going to great homes. We also openned our hearts for wounded and neglected strays, making sure they got their treatment, rehabitation and if needed surgery.
So with hospice and wonderful volunteers we have made a succes and would love to celebrate that together with you. Please, bring your friends and you will meet suprises, like-minded people and the donation box inside a warm Casa dell'Amore!

OUR ANGEL ZAMIRA ROCKET GOT HEAVENLY WINGS

We were having a food donation drive and also to put frontline on 200 dogs (donations only to half of the dogs)) at Adrianna's 400 shelter --these are dogs that are both Governmental and Private dogs. Some of the volunteers got cracker boxes to go around and give the shelter dogs a treat. You felt hopeless but that feeling had to be pushed to the side. Pitty didn't help, documentation and more volunteers could make a difference.

I took a walk around starring into every cage. These dogs never come out, some stays had been there up to 16 years. How could I pick someone, it was confusion inside me --- which one when everyone was in desperate need of a home or medical treatment?

Suddenly, I stopped outside a cage with only one dog inside. She had the strangest body I had ever seen, she reminded me of ET. But those eyes just went through my soul.

Her! She's the one! Something yelled inside of me.

Some of the girls told me they had sat outside her cage crying. When I openned the cage and carried her out, they all cheered.

Everyone that met Zamira fell in love with her. Yes we named her that.

She had been locked in a cage since 2003 on a concrete floor and with a disease like the African children have... starving but with a swollen belly. She couldn't make use of nutrition since one of her inner organs didn't work very well.

When visitng Dr Damiani's office they all fell in love with her, and she hated the cage and made big noises. So they let her out roaming around in the clinic were she was actually very happy to be. Thank you Dr Damiani, Dr Fransesca, Dr Fransesco.

At the hospice we found out she loved chasing balls, it looked so funny... she just took off and then she ate the ball(s). She actually had a high speed so we named her; Zamira Rocket!

Adrianna came after a couple of weeks and visited Zamira and smiled when she saw her, there in freedom wobbling in the grass, laying in a warm soft bed. Adrianna asked me how long I thougth Zamira had left in life, if it was one week or one month. She knew she didn't have a long time left, but with time and spirit, you can never predict.

It came actually faster than I wanted, but does it matter how long we wish for? We always want to extend time with the ones we love the most.

She became weaker. We drove her in to Dr Fransesco who wanted her on a diet of only Turkey for a short time and then make a biopsy on the inner organs to find a cause why she was not doing as well as before.

Her health went down so fast that they wanted to do a surgery and they called me for permission. Whatever was the best for Zamira without her suffering was our goal, together with Dr Damiani and team.

Dr Damiani called me and had no good news, her pancreases (Picture above) was nearly gone, her liver was severely damaged (Below) and her tongue was badly necrotic ( dead ) on the tip of her tongue. (above picture of pancreases). There was no point in continuing the biopsy.

My decision, which many supported, let Zamira-Rocket get to her final destination: freedom.

With an injection she went over to meet her other friends, some from the hospice and some new, but finally they could all together run after balls in the cool green grass across Rainbow Bridge, on strong firm legs, with lungs and organs that worked effortlessly as they should.

Adrianna said goodbye to her, with the rest of the AWL team, she was never alone. Our little ET girl full of love. We miss you so much already.

Thank you all for doing what we all want to do, giving them belly rubs, sunshine, soft beds, great food, medicine and humane euthanization. That's Liebe Amore

As an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, we rely on the generosity of our friends and benefactors. Each month we cross our fingers and pray that our donations will meet our needs (rent, medicine, food, repairs, etc).
So, it is only right that we thank those who make what we do possible.
The painting team from the Navy Hospital at the Support Site (NSA Naples). For a whole Saturday they were painting at the Hospice. Their efforts result in a wonderfully clean and updated appearance in the upstairs bedrooms and the fence around the property.

Thank you everyone for your good bye's for me when it was my time to leave Italy. It is nice to know I had many wonderful friends.

ADOPTIONS TO GERMANY?

Some update information from AWL Germany.

Some research have been made about adopting dogs here in Stuttgart area, and I found an information sheet writing to Americans, that here are many animal shelters around but it is difficult for Americans to adopt.

Of course that made me even more curious.

Visiting the American vet clinic yesterday, they confirmed the information I had gotten. Here is the same problem as in Napoli. Service families PCSing and abandoning their dogs. Actually some people adopted dogs for free, and then sold them to other people.

We discussed in general terms previously that AWL would help in adopting dogs up to Stuttgart, since we were informed that Americans wanted to adopt dogs since they didn’t want to spend hundreds of euros on pure breeds.

However, given what we have found out since arriving in Stuttgart, AWL has decided to not be part of any adoptions in Germany. We are trying to help a bad situation in Napoli, not t move the problems. We know that there are sincere people who want to adopt but they can get together with a German friend to visit the many shelters (7) around here and adopt directly. (Many come from horrible shelters in Romania)

The dogs here are just as worthy of a good forever home as those in Napoli.

AWL is not going to be a part of contributing to a growing problem here in Germany, one that is much the same as in Campania area.

She became senile and it was scary to see grandma walking around but when you tried to talk to her, she was not there.

THREE DIFFERENT LIVES ~ ALL LOVED

Three different dogs, three different stories ~all loved

Clyde is a Collie that adopted us in America 2005 I knew about one Collie living in the woods there near our house. Sometimes I saw his tail disappear into the underbrush, but I never saw the whole him. At that time we had three other adopted dogs and had no plans for adopting another one. But, they began cutting down the woods and more workers and traffic started to arrive. One morning I heard some men shouting. When I looked out the window, I saw them throwing rocks at this handsome Collie. I ran out and yelled at the men to stop, the Collie ran away. The next day I saw him looking in through my window, and for three days he sat outside waiting for me to come out. He looked horrible after a long time in the woods. Well as you can see, he moved in with us and moved with us to Italy. I call him my English Gentleman. When opening the door the three brats ran in and you had to hold yourself in the doorway not to be knocked over. Clyde stood outside with his head tilted "May I come in?" Strangely he never walked on carpets, always around. He was always great with other dogs, and children, but cats he loved to chase. We never got to know his age but we guess at least over 10 years. A couple of days ago he collapsed down the stairs and didn't get up, after that he wasn't himself. It is painful to watch, your friend becoming someone else, when I look at him I see Clyde but when I walk with him I feel like walking someone else's dog. I remember the same feeling when my grandmother was diagnosed senile, I saw her but her soul was gone. Clyde has had a wonderful life but it is very soon time to let him go. Across the Rainbow Bridge, he will be without pain and able to run (and chase cats) again.

AWL volunteer Martina woke up in the middle of the night by a scream from a dog. She looked out and found this little fellow, which had been thrown in over the fence into her yard. Freddy is a lovely little dog, and would love to be adopted. This story is just beginning, but hopefully there will soon be someone who write the following chapters.

Hope was found on the street, looking like this with ronga and probably other diseases. She is in a shelter and is in big need of medicine and treatments. More information later. This one doesn't have the makings of a happy story. But there is someone out there, we "hope," that will turn a tragedy into a love story with a lot of care, love and patience.

HEAVEN GOT AN ANGEL ANGELO

For many years they had lived together on the streets, watched-overby a bag man that was taking care ofthem. Together with 3 other dogs they ate and lived on the streets.

But one day via FB came a request forhelp; the caretaker had died and now some people wanted to poison the dogs orthrow them in the shelter. The only solution would be to throw them in shelterif no one would adopt them. After 17 years for Angelo and 14 years for Tigro,would their freedom be taken from them; sent to prison, a cold wet concrete floor? No caretaking, not anyhealthy food just to sit on a small square and wait for death to release them.AWL answered and told the rescue team we could take Angelo and Tigro to our newlyopened hospice. Angelo was like a big teddy bear and he was blind. Tigro, asmall female --- his wife --- was his eyes. She escorted him around the houseby putting her nose on his back legs, nudging him which way he had to go. Whenhe knew his way around she “divorced” him and moved together with Dicky, ayounger more handsome male. Angelo washappy, peace and quiet he could do what he loved the most: Eat and sleep.Walking around in his green garden with we volunteers loving up on him. Ah, hewas in Sanctuary, a good five star stray hotel for elderly strays being servedand their dog bed fluffed up.

But all good thingsmust come to an end. Dicky got sick andhad to be euthanized several weeks ago. And now Angelo was in decline, too. The years on the street, lack of good food, and just old age had takenits toll. He couldn’t get up, and whenhe was helped up, he was unsteady on his feet. He was in pain. It was time to cross over the Rainbow Bridge.

So on Saturday,several of we volunteers took him to Dr. Damiani for the last time. In a caring environment, with people wholoved him around him, Angelo slipped the grasp of the pain he had endured toolong, crossed the Rainbow Bridge, and with his new wings, is now running andplaying, sniffing and seeing again, playing in the cool, green grass.

Good bye, sweetAngelo. The Casa dell’ Amore is not thesame without you. We will miss you andlove you always.

”The rumors of our death have been greatlyexaggerated...”

Lately, there have been a number of people talking and thinking that AWL is coming to an end in Campania. I suppose this is a logical assumption, sinceit is true that I’m moving to Germany. Theserumors and assumptions, are false.

I want to make one thing crystal clear:Animals Without Limits will continue on in Campania. The hospice we’ve worked so hard and long toestablish... will continue. I willcontinue to oversee our operations in Campania, and will be down in Campania asoften as I can.

The need and thus the work here will continue,and AWL will continue to help address that need. These rumors are slightlyhurtful to me, but more so for the animals. How many haven’t been helped already because people thought AWL was nolonger operating to follow through with whatever was required? We who care about these animals can’t allowthat to happen. Here is enough problemsto solve for all of us, and we won’t get there by holding back information, orworse spreading false information. Again, it is about the animals, not AWL or me. We must stay focused and dedicated to thepurpose of all our work, all these years.

In the midst of everything going on, Icompletely missed that the hospice has now been operating a whole year. My husband had to remind me this was our one-yearanniversary of Casa dell’ Amore. When weopened, there were some voices saying it wouldn’t last. Perhaps some hoped it wouldn’t. This first year is just the beginning, wewill continue as long as there is a need ( and we don’t see the need going awayany time soon.)

Despite this year of operation, therecontinues to be confusion about what our hospice is. Let’s start to explain our’Casa dell’Amore.” It is not a shelter, it is a Sanctuary for older strays thatcannot for some reasons take care of themselves on the street anymore, or theyare sick and need treatments. We also rescue shelter animals that have beenlocked in the concentration camps on concrete floors without even a littleoutside exercise for many years. The last days, or months or year is supposedto be quiet, green grass, healthy food and love. On our second floor we haverecovery/rehab where animals that have been injured and need extra care arekept so we can care for them and whenrecovered our Italian working colleagues do the adoption. In one year over 30successful adoptions and zero have come back.

We do not and will not accept healthy dogs, weare a rehab/hospice.

I am moving from Italy to Germany but willstill be the President of Animals Without Limits, International. The last decisions will be mine, I will continue to ensure that the vet clinics we use get myapproval before any clients are accepted. I will continue to distribute thespay/neuter vouchers as required. No dogs can stay in Casa del’’Amore withoutmy approval.

Guje Syrén: När du arbetar med att rädda djur och välja ut djur från shelter osv, hur mycket använder du dig av djurkommunikation, dvs "prata" med djuren telepatiskt? Märker du att djuren känner din känslighet för det?

Mia: Hej Guje, Min kommunikation är alltid på. Jag använder den hela tiden. Djuren känner det och känner sig trygga och litar på att jag inte är ond.En isolerad hund kunde kommunicera att hon inte var farlig, utan missförstådd. Jag tog ut henne och nu lever hon med 19 hundar och barn, helt underbar!

Wynja: Mia, hur bemöter du eventuella kommentarer om att det är djur du hjälper, när det finns så många lidande människor? jag har svårt veta vad jag ska svara folk som tycker att jag borde ägna mig åt plågade människor istället för djur,,,,//Wynja

Mia: Hej Wynja, Tack och lov ar det inte ofta det händer, men jag brukar fråga om de hjälper människor eller blommor. :-) Universum räknar inte vem som skall ha mest hjälp. Det finns tillräckligt för oss alla att hjälpa: människor, jorden, djuren, blommorna.. Vi har våra roller där vår passion ligger och där kan vi göra mest nytta.

Sigge: Hur får jag min hund att känna sej trygg i bilen ? Att sluta skälla och gny

Mia: Hej Sigge, en bra tränare eller träningsmetod och meditation tillsammans med vovven din. Först hemma, sedan i bilen och de första gångerna behöver du kanske inte köra iväg. Vi har en tendens att "sända" till våra djur frustration eller oro och de plockar upp det och förstår inte varför, endast att husse är frustrerad och då måste bilturen vara likadan. :-)

Lotta: Funkar det på samma sätt med hundar som med människor, när vi dör osv, kan dom förstå att vi kanske måste ta bort dom för att det var för deras eget bästa?

Mia: Hej Lotta, det är en svår fråga med endast ett kort svar. Jag kallar dem "mini-buddhister", de vet långt före oss och vet vad som väntar dem. Däremot kanske de inte vet vad som är för deras bästa. Vi ser inte många svartsjuka djur, så vad som kan vara obehagligt för oss kanske inte är det för dem. MEN om de lider så följer en tacksamhet med. Men detta är en svår balans naturligtvis. Kunniga veterinärer kan hjälpa dig och din intuition.

Mia: Hej Markus, Tack för dina fina ord. Jag lär mig otroligt mycket av djuren, det är den roliga skolan. :-) Tålamod, tro och tillit och att vara i lugnet. Inte vara rädd och att kunna förlåta. Jag har gjort mycket motstånd emot detta och de är tappra tålmodiga lärare. Det är svårt, för den svåraste utmaningen är att arbeta med förståelse emot ondskan och nonchalansen. Att lyssna, se och inte ursäkta men att kunna se var det började med ondskan. Att också inse att djuren gått längre än vi människor...att vi tappat mycket av vår kunskap. Wow deras tålmodighet är stor!Jag glömde nästan svara på en viktig fråga. Jag brinner för att rädda, för jag ser själen i deras ögon. Ett rop på storhet. Jag själv var i en lång och svår uppväxt och känner igen deras känslor med mina egna, jag vet hur det är när ingen hör en. Kram

Anna: Hej Mia! Min katt Leon trillade i dag ner från balkongen, fem våningar. Vi har varit hos veterinären och hon upptäckte inga skador., men menade på att jag skulle bevaka hans allmänhälsa närmaste dygnet. Kan du känna in om det finns några skador och om jag kan göra något? Vore oerhört tacksam för svar!

Mia: Hej Marika, det finns många olika vägar att gå och den första är passionen, har du den kommer Universum leda dig. När vi brinner visar sig vägen av glädje. Du kan gå alla tänkbara kurser i att utveckla och träna intuitionen och instinkten. Sedan tar du och pratar med vänners vänner om att få öva på djur. Använd block och penna och skriv. Det svåraste är att inte gå in själv och redigera tankarna. Visst finns det kurser, men jag har bott för många år utomlands och kan därför inte rekommendera någon. Passionen visar vägen, ödmjukheten visar djuren och du finner det du söker

.Emma: om jag vill jobba som du, rädda djur från ett otäckt öde, hur ska jag gå till väga? Tar du emot volontärer? Har försökt lära mig djurkommunikation men klarar det inte. Har du några enkla, men effektiva, tips?Fortsätt med det du gör, för det är helt fantastiskt!

Elisabet J: Jag känner en oerhört stark koppling till djur och försöker "tala tyst" till dom med bilder och positiva ord. Jag skulle vilja lära mig föra över mina tankar till djuren. Tror du det går ? Kram !

Mia: Jättebra! När du tänker och sänder skickar du bilder till dem. MEN djur och människor pratar inte samma språk i text, utan i känslor. Använd inte ordet INTE för det finns ingen bild för INTE, så du sänder tvärtom. Till exempel "Hoppa inte!" skickar du till hunden, men vad du sänder är "Hoppa!". Lycka till! :-)

Eva: Hade Peppe mycket ont innan han dog? Är han här med mej ibland,jag bara undrar.Tack,Eva.

Mia: Käraste Eva, med Peppe känner jag en stor kärlek och tacksamhet och kloka ögon. Han är med dig hela tiden. Han blir glad när du ler och ni har många fina minnen tillsammans. Wiola: Kan alla prata med djur? Har märkt att jag själv gjort det någon gång visste inte då vad hästen råkat ut för. Men fick senare reda på att det stämde med vad hästen berättat för mig

Mia: Hej Wiola, alla kan prata med djur... Vi kan alla till exempel spela piano, men har vi passionen, känslan, ödmjukheten och glädjen. Det är som musikstycken, det tar tid att lära, mycket övningar, gnisslande tänder och glädjetjut. Underbart att du fick kommunicerat med hästen. Fortsätt och du får uppleva ljuvliga toner i djurens värld.

Helena o Simson: Hej Mia! Vill bara lägga in ett TACK för allt du gjort för mig o min Simson även om det nu är många år sedan. Vi bodde då på Gärdet, högst upp i ett av husen högst upp på Gärdeshöjden, ovanför ditt kontor.Simson skvallrade massor på mig o kallade sin kompis Atos för Fjanten! =)Det var så häftigt allt du lyckades få fram om honom och vi fortsatte med massage o kiropraktik tills han gick bort. Mia: Hej Sofia och Grattis på födelsedagen kisse. Du gör redan väldigt mycket han är härligt bortskämd och ni kommunicerar med varandra på ett tryggt sätt. Du är en underbar mamma.... De som undrar vad de kan göra mer för sina djur (barn) är de mammor som älskar villkorslöst. Hipp Hurra!

marie: Vem hjälper hunden över till andra sidan? Hur kan de ta kontakt med oss efteråt? Var är de?

Mia: Hej Marie, de är "mini-buddhister" och deras själ är inte förvirrad eller rädd så de vet var de ska, deras själ känner igen vägen. Men där de befinner sig är ett fantastiskt ställe där deras krämpor släpper. De lekar och skuttar, och det är färgglatt omkring dem. Deras själ tar kontakt med oss i en hög hastighet/frekvens och de finns ofta omkring oss. När vår sorg är som störst kan deras kommunikation inte komma igenom för tårarna stänger hjärtat, själens kommunikation. De kommer tillbaka och försöker hela tiden. Det är lite svårt att förklara, så det kanske är lite luddigt svarat. :-) Men jag gillade dina frågor. Jag får skriva ett kapitel om det i min kommande bok. :-)

Ann: Hej Mia!Har en hund och en katt, förstår de varandras språk och kommunicerar med varandra? Mvh Ann

Mia: Hej Ann, det är som två olika kulturer träffas. Visst, de kan förstå men deras temperament kan vara som: Hund från Sverige och Katt från Italien, olika temperament och formuleringar av känslor. Konflikt eller kärlek kan uppstå. :-)

Marika: Hej Mia! Gjorde jag rätt emot Tindra då hon avlivades?Har hon det bra? Är hon hos mig varje dag?Tack på förhand! MVH: Marika

Mia: Hej Marika, Tindras känslighet och vackra själ har det bra. Hon är oerhört tacksam för allt stöd och mod som du gav. Hon svävar runt dig, själen sjunger hon var känslig och vacker. Hon saknar dig också och är med dig i ditt hjärta, jag lovar dig! Kram fina!

Lena: Hej.Vi har en ponny som det inte går att lasta. Hur ska vi få honom trygg så att han kan åka transport? Man kan ju inte varken sälja eller åka på tävlingar med honm. Jättesynd på en annars fin ponny. Vi kan inte bara ha honom här hemma.

Mia: Hej Lena, jag hade anlitat en mjuk tränare som använder både huvud och hjärta. Sedan hade jag själv under tiden mediterat med honom. Första stunden med tillit och mjukhet. Andra meditationsgången hade jag mediterat hur jag ser honom gå upp för rampen till trailern. Jag skulle utesluta de personer som blir frustrerade eller inte har tålamod för de sänder hela tiden. Ni måste vara ett team. Man kan inte förhandla med ett djur, men man kan sända tillit till djur och de behöver känna denna tillit konstant. De är som vi när "mamma" sänder två signaler... Frustration ena dagen och glädje andra dagen, utan förklaring. ;-) Lycka till och det skall vara roligt.

susanne: Hejsan, jag skulle gärna vilja jobba som volontär, men undrar hur skall man kunna få den styrkan så att man inte gråter för allt, kram Susanne

Mia: Hej Susanne, det är som med att bli läkare. Man får börja från början med att arbeta med lättare uppgifter. Till exempel att vara med vara klienter i hospicet som är räddade, som kommer att titta på dig med frågande blick om du gråter. *skrattar* Det är som ett träningsläger. :-) Vi gråter allihop. Jag gråter varje dag och den dag jag slutar gråta är det dags att byta arbete. :-)

BILLY BOB'S JOURNEY

My story started a long time ago. Maybe not for you humans but for we dogs it is a very long time ago.
I hadn't been so lucky in my start in life. Abandoned, skin and bones and scared by Italian men, not to talk about colored men. But I saw one American man walking his dog on base and they looked nice, his dog was happy with him so I thought "hey, I want one of those too!" I followed them home, he took me in and in a laundry basket out on the balcony was my new bed.

Strange enough, two days later another man came and picked me up and I ended up in a home called a hospice with a lot of old, smelly dogs. Not exactly what I had in mind. A blonde lady with big white teeth was talking to me in a language I didn't understand, but she seemed ok. (She wasn't as smelly).

At this place they had charity party, they had volunteers that came and cleaned after me and the others. They also yelled at me when I had chewed up some things, which wasn't so nice. But I have to say, I loved it there after some time.

I got to play and always got food. Some younger dogs that came in left pretty fast, they got new families. But no one wanted me.

I could hear them talk "He is so sweet in reality, if people could only see that. Poor guy he is not photogenic, his pictures don't sell him." I wondered how I could overcome this? Maybe charm school?

Many months later, there were the volunteers jumping and hugging me. According to them I got a family and they knew this family too. My only concern was, I had to fly, you see my new home was in Sweden. I didn't know how I would do that... I'm a dog, not a bird!

My new mom flew down to pick me up, and I was told she already had one pretty dog from Napoli so I felt secure. What I liked about "mom" was that she didn't force herself on me, I could check her out and read her. I also found out, I didn't have to fly myself, I could ride in a thing called a "plane," it's like a big car that goes fast through the sky.

And who couldn't love her, she brought presents, ProCollar, 3 different sizes and more than 10 bags of dog treats without additive, pure liver. The dog-treat company is searching for an agent to represent them here in Italy. May I tell you that all the dogs loved them? Tastes like liver and pigears, that's amore yummi. I don't understand human business, but if dogs had money, they would spend it all on this stuff!

I was a great boy. The ride up to Rome's airport in the big silver car was easy, and I didn't make a sound or a mess. At the airport, with lots of people and carts and noices, I walked quietly beside my new lady, and laid down on the cool tile floor every chance I got. When the time came, I walked right in to my crate and the door closed. You see AWL doesn't believe in training crates to fly, they tell us what we are going to do: "Get up in that airplane and meet your new family". So, we trust in those we know will be there for us. That is the same doggy code we work with, that humans call "Unconditional Love".

I'm having a blast up here in Sweden, with my new best friend "Freckles". She was the one I mentioned who also came from Napoli. She has shown me around the farm and the woods, and we are having an absolute blast every day playing until we fall asleep exhausted. The people are pretty nice, too, especially the boy-human. I'm going to love it here, I just know.

I want to give everyone a big kiss for supporting me all these months. Mia, Todd, Marty, Chiara, Patty, Pio, Bruce and to my new home...That's Paradizo. Grazie Tutti, from me Billy Bob

An Amazing colorful team came out last Saturday and did a fantastic change inside our rehab/hospice (Casa ell'Amore) with warm colors.

Gina with husband Werner joined, and worked very hard with picking stones, filling all the wholes that Benny and BB had been digging for quiet some time. A danger to Zamira and Angelo, since they couldn't see them and could twist their legs in the holes. It was a very hot day 97 F

Jason brought his team with him, Abbie, Maranda, Ginger, Alexia and Nick and they worked hard the whole day.

A warm sunny color to brighten the clients' mood up, and of course we volunteers too.

Rocket-Zamira was very interested in keeping an eye so that everything went well. At the end she got a white tail!

We had a great time sprucing up the Casa, and finished with Pizza and drinks for lunch.
